With an aim to gather the creatives, Know Your Scoopie is a monthly introductory series where Scoopoint introduces their members; encouraging them to get personal about themselves, and stay connected within the community.
This month, Scoopoint introduces the content creator of Visual Atelier: Benjamin Mok.
Hey Ben, tell us about yourself!
Hi! My name is Benjamin Mok Zi Jun, but most of my friends usually calls me Ben. I was born in Penang, Malaysia and is currently a twenty-four year old content creator for Visual Atelier – a company that creates content through photography, and videography.
My deceased grandfather plays a vital role in shaping the person I have become today. When I was little, he would take me on his small adventures; bringing me to Butterworth from Penang, through ferries, trains and buses. On my grandfather’s deathbed, one of his final wishes was to travel. Being raised in a traditional family in Penang, it has always been my dream to travel to other countries to experience the different cultures and people. So, with the small sum of money my grandfather had left me for education purposes, I decided to take the opportunity to study abroad in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. It was only a 6 month study period — but i thought, “why stop at one country? I’m already here, and this may be the only chance for me to travel in Europe.”
It was then when I started to challenge myself, to see how many countries I could travel to in one month. As a result, I did the impossible and travelled to fifteen countries, and twenty places in a month in Europe; with the gloves my grandfather used to wear. I felt as though it was indirectly taking him everywhere with me, fulfilling his wish to travel and to live a life that I will remember. Come to think of it, it’s going to be a great story to tell my grandchildren in the future.
The one month travel became an obsession for me. I began to crave travelling more. I returned to Malaysia, and worked for Uber as a Greenlight expert; that was when I met my current business partner, Ivan Lee. We quickly bonded through our love for travelling, photography and videography. Few months late, we both quit our jobs and started Visual Atelier.
If you could use three words to describe yourself, what would it be?
The determined wanderlust. I don’t even want to stop exploring. I look forward to a future where I’m always on the go; to travel and to tell compelling stories through my own perspective.
Tell us about your greatest accomplishment
One of my proudest accomplishment was travelling fifteen countries and twenty different places in a span of one months. My friends and parents thought I was crazy for trying to pull that off!
What’s something no one knows about you?
With the amount and the range of camera equipments I own, most people think that I’m wealthy. Little do they know that most of the money I earn is spent on gear in order to support myself. It’s like an on-going cycle; in order to earn, I need to buy the equipments. Haha!
I hope, as I explore deeper, that I could eventually travel to anywhere I want; so I can fulfil my dream of travelling to every country in the world. Air tickets are expensive you know, haha!
So, who’s your favourite director?
My favourite director would have to be the brilliant Christopher Nolan. I love that his films are really grounded and thought provoking. Not to mention, most importantly, he’s an excellent storyteller.
If you’d have to give yourself a theme song, what would it be?
My theme song is The Nights by Avicii (RIP). It’s one of the songs that inspired me to travel and explore the world. “To live a life I will remember.”
Any personal recommendations, Ben?
Three books I love to read: The 48 Laws of Power, The 7 habits of highly effective people, and Who stole my cheese? A good book shifts our paradigms and perspective on how we see the world. These books are the ones that impacts the way I handle things.
So, why Scoopoint?
I knew about Scoopoint from my mentor Mei Tan; I used to move model houses for her. I soon found out later that she graduated within the Creative industry as a designer. We then bonded and she introduced me to her co-working space, Scoopoint, where like minded people like us bond together and exchange ideas.
