With an aim to gather the creatives, Know Your Scoopie is a monthly introductory series where Scoopoint introduces their members; encouraging them to get personal about themselves, and stay connected within the community.

This month, Scoopoint introduces the face, the voice and the magic brewer behind Penang Food & Travel magazine: Joel Teh.

Hey Joel! Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name’s Joel, I’m currently 26 year old, born and bred in Penang, Malaysia; which makes me absolutely lucky as I get to be pampered by a multi-racial environment with diverse traditions and scrumptious food choices in this wonderful island.

As a graduate of Mass Communications from University of Hertfordshire, UK, I have found my passion in the media industry; making me an editor of My Publications today. If you consider yourself a nomad or a foodie, and have wandered the streets of Penang, you probably have already heard of “Penang Food & Travel” – a monthly magazine that promotes Penang as the best travel destination in the world. With all the awards and recognition, Penang’s tourism line is growing rapidly; its popularity spreading towards overseas too, which is why our magazine carries a huge mission in promoting more specialties of Penang to not only the local, but foreign readers too.

Besides being a magazine junkie who works in the journalism line, I’m also a singer and an emcee. Since I was a child, my parents had sent me to all sorts of singing competitions to enhance my singing skills and to accumulate stage experiences. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but I would say that singing is one of the gifts that was inherited through my family genes – from my grandfather to my father, and now, the talent’s been passed on to me. Hopefully it doesn’t stop there, as I would like to pass this singing talent to my own children. As I have been singing for almost 16 years, my voice has become my most powerful weapon to make money, and to influence others as well.

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Quirky – As a born extrovert, people would always claim that my extraordinary behavior goes beyond the roof and it’s uncontrollable. I would do things at random and like certain things that can come across unexpected – for instance, I love the smell of books, tightly hugging my friends out of nowhere, as well as jump and scream like I’ve been possessed when I get too excited.

Badass – Though I can be cute, I have a strong side to my character where I’m not afraid to be transparent. As I’m a direct person, I often wear my expressions the exact way on how I’m feeling. There’s no need for anyone to guess or wonder what I’m up to. When I’m not interested in something, I’ll be nonchalant and upfront about it. Conversely, when I’m really into something, I would just sink myself into it.

Young – No matter how old I’m growing, I always encourage myself to stay forever young, cheerful and playful to keep my life colourful and pleasant. My objective of having such characteristics is not just to make my life better, but to influence the people around to be proactive and positive.

Share with us, your proudest accomplishment in your life.

Among the many awards I have won from numerous competitions, winning 6th place in Astro Hua Hee Karaoke Competition back in 2012 was definitely memorable for me. However, I don’t think that makes me fully proud of myself just yet. I believe that there is still a long way to go.

Tell us something not many people know about you

As a Christian who is active to serve the worship ministry in church, people often has the stereotypical thought on me where they think I am conservative and rigid minded, but they do not know that my open mindedness is truly wide. For example, I support and advocate the movement of feminism, putting a stop to animal abuse, as well as, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. The reason I’m so open to all these matters because I believe everyone deserves a peaceful and quality life for themselves.

If you could be a superhero, what superpowers would you like to own, and why?

Growing up, I have always been interested in magic and witchcraft – much like Harry Potter – so if I ever do gain a superpower, I think they would heavily be based around the American series, Charmed. I’d want a combination of telekinesis, teleportation, premonition and the power to freeze time. I wish to have all these powers is because I wanted to save the world, not just eliminating devil acts in this place, but to change the future for a better good.

Do you have a theme song?

If you have heard of Superfruit by Scott and Mitch from Pentatonix, you should listen to one of their songs, ‘Guy Exe‘. I personally study the song as my current theme song; not because I am looking for a relationship, but the lyrics itself  hit my heart deeply. For instance, there is a line that indicates that you will never find someone or achieve your goals if your expectations are too high to reach. As a perfectionist, I have realized that sometimes over pushing things might ruin the work in any way that we do not want them to happen. Hence, being chill is actually important for people like me to get my things done productively.

As a writer, what is your favourite book of all time?

Definitely ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ – all seven of them. I have been collecting all their merchants, books and DVDs since I was in primary school. The main reason why I love the series so much is because their storylines are creative and outstanding than usual fairytales. Plus, C.S. Lewis himself is my all time favourite. I enjoy reading all the books he published, and he has become an inspiration for me for someone who writes in the journalism line today.

So, why Scoopoint?

For someone who works from home, it’s easy to get lonely, and sometimes, I face downsides from the unproductive work I have done; so I’m in need of a place with like-minded people to help hype me up. And in comes Scoopoint! Who has provided me a platform that help nurture the creative talents in the heart of George Town!
