In conjunction with our monthly series #KnowYour Scoopie, Meet the Team is an introductory series which allows team members of Scoopoint to personally introduce themselves, as well as allowing the public to learn about the people behind the creative space.
This month, we introduce Mei Tan – the Founder and CEO of Scoopoint Coworking!
Hey, I’m Mei Tan. I was born and raised in Penang but studied and worked in the States for about seven years. I’m currently the CEO and Founder of Scoopoint Co-working Space, COO and Creative Director of Asia Green Group and recently, the Co-Founder and Director of Asia Innovative Agency. I like to think of myself as a Creativentreprenuer — someone who is both creative and business-minded.
If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Passionate — I consider myself to be a passionate person in the things I do. No matter how many projects I have at hand, the second it sparks my interest, I would avert my attention and drive my excitement towards it.
Visionary — I love thinking and planning ahead for a better and bright future. I don’t think there ever comes a day where my mind shuts off. I’m constantly thinking of the next big thing, and what I can do to be better. Any excuse to conquer, am I right?
Compassionate — The most important thing to remember is to stay human and to stay humble. Everyone needs to have some compassion towards one another; after all, we are all human!
How do you spend your free time?
I’m a pretty active person, so when I do have time to spare, I spend a lot of it working out, doing outdoor activities and playing sports. I used to be a frequent painter, and enjoy reading, but with so little time, I’m unable to fully commit myself in such hobbies as I can’t seem to find the time. I do, however, find myself travelling and exploring new experiences, which fortunately comes with my packed schedule, but no matter the situation, I always make sure I spend time with my family.
What is something not many people know about you?
When I was younger, I used to have low self-esteem and have little to no confidence in public speaking. It was mainly because I felt self-conscious with the way I looked, as I was often called “fat” for a long time. It made it hard for me to speak. I suppose, being in the States changed me drastically. I eventually learn to appreciate myself more and after being forced to present in front of an audience, it slowly boosts my self-confidence. In my opinion, I think the environment and the support you receive from your peers are very important. It’s also one of the reasons why I started Scoopoint.
If you were a super-hero, what powers would you have, and why?
Haha! I think it goes without saying that most people who know me, would know that if I were to be a superhero, I’d be Wonder Woman any day! I would love to have her speed, her strength and the lasso of truth. In general, her compassionate heart and her capability to have such a powerful impact on people’s lives are what I would love to gain and what I personally model myself to become.
If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?
I would love to meet Walt Disney. He has been my icon since I was a young child. It’s magical and creative—what he does; turning a single cartoon into an entire empire. He’s the true Creativentreprenuer that knows the balance and mixture between creativity and business. What he created, until today, remain as experiences and memories.
If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to?
I don’t think I would go back in time if I’m ever given the opportunity. I’m a person who doesn’t like to dwell on the past, and instead, work on better things in the future. The experiences you face and overcome makes you who you are today; it allows room for improvement and growth. So I don’t think I would want to go back in time.
